UC
157 F1 is a clonal
HYBRID that has set the standard for the
fresh green asparagus spear industry
throughout the world. UC 157 F1
was released in 1975 and has become the predominant
asparagus cultivar in California
and in other parts of the world with moderate
to hot climatic conditions. UC 157 F1
produces an all green spear with closely oppressed
bud scales and a tight tapering spear tip.
The medium diameter spears are smooth with
a round cross section.
Spear production starts very early in
the spring with very little purple coloration
to the spear. Spear yields are high and depending
on the inter-plant spacing will produce medium
to large diameter spears during the spring
harvest. UC 157 F1
is being used for both green and white
spear production.The hybrid
vigor of the UC 157 F1
provides for a high degree of tolerance to
Fusarium and a moderate tolerance to
rust.
UC 157 F1 is typically
planted at 1.5 meters between rows (or more)
with an in-row spacing of 25 to 30cm between
plants. Greater in-row spacing results in
larger average spear diameters.
The UC 157 F1
seed is certified by the California
Crop Improvement Association as to the genetic
purity and quality of the seed.
Field and equipment inspections are conducted
by the California Crop Improvment Association
and the California Department of Food and
Agriculture, respectively.
